Chapter Eight
Lang was confused as hell and knew Jax was as well. By mutual agreement they were moving out of Lucien’s house. They had gotten a helicopter to come in at first light to pick Lucien up and take him to the hospital. The helicopter had come back for them an hour later, leaving them near to where they had left their truck.
They had driven to the hospital, only to be told that they couldn’t see Lucien, that he was being prepped for surgery. Angel showed up with his husbands, Ben and Cross. Angel wanted to know how Lucien got hurt and they gave him a G-rated version of the story. They stayed at the hospital long enough to learn that Lucien’s surgery had gone very well. Relieved, they left the hospital and headed to his house. Ben and Cross would stay to provide protection until they could be relieved. As they went home they called Jace and told him that he needed to switch bodyguards. Jace didn’t ask why, just said that he would do it. Levi and Connor would take over. They were relieved. Levi and Connor were good, reliable men.
“We really fucked up,” Jax said with his usual gritty candor.
“Yes,” Lang agreed as he got his duffel from the closet. He shoved his clothes in it, uncaring how they went in as long as they fit. He wasn’t going to disagree with his lover. They had allowed themselves to begin feeling things for Lucien that they shouldn’t have. “Leaving will be for the best. We took advantage of him. He’s still really vulnerable. He wants someone to love him.”
“I think I do love him.”
Okay. That got Lang’s attention. Jax didn’t usually express himself so openly. He looked at his lover and saw the pain in his gorgeous brown eyes. He recognized it because he was feeling it himself.
“I think I do, too. Still, Lucien needs time to heal from what he went through with Stephen, so he knows what he wants and needs.”
Jax nodded as he zipped his own duffel. “You’re right. Giving him space will help him decide.” He grinned suddenly which startled Lang. “Other than you, I don’t think I’ve ever met such a perfect man.”
Wow. Lang blinked then swallowed the lump in his throat. All this unexpected mushy stuff coming out of Jax’s mouth was his undoing. “Keep talking like that and you might get lucky, mister.”
It was a weak attempt to lighten a very depressing moment. He didn’t need Jax to tell him that they had gone where they shouldn’t have. They had both seen something in Lucien that was very special. The guy hadn’t deserved to be betrayed the way he had been by people he trusted. Though a couple of months had passed, it was obvious that he was still vulnerable and hurting. In the process of becoming his friend they had become something more. He was attracted to them. They were attracted to him.
But knowing what they did, they should have resisted their attraction to Lucien St.
